And like the traditional Mandalorians, the Tusken Raiders are prohibited from ever removing their masks in front of other people, except for their immediate family members. Despite that, there have been instances in the Star Wars Legends (non-canon media and literature) wherein the Tusken Raiders have shown their faces.
Over the years, the aliens have made a handful of maskless appearances throughout the Star Wars universe. The first time a Tusken was ever seen by fans without a mask was in the 1997 video game Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, pictured above. There’s a group in the game known as Grave Tuskens, who appear to have cat-like features.
However, it could be possible that being a Tusken Raider is about beliefs, not a race. The thing about the Tusken Raiders is that the canon never really described what they look like because they have always been shown with their masks on.
What do Tusken Raiders wear?
Living a harsh life out in the Jundland Wastes and the Dune Sea, the Tusken Raiders are always seen wearing robes, gloves, heavily shrouded faces, goggles and breathing apparatus to protect them from sandstorms and the scorching twin suns of Tatooine.
The first time was in the 1997 video game Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, which featured a mercenary gang called the Grave Tuskens, who had cat-like faces. The second instance was in the 2004 comic Star Wars: Republic #62, in which Anakin Skywalker had nightmarish visions that included a half-unmasked Tusken Raider.
Native to Tatooine, the planet where both Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker grew up, Tusken Raiders made their first appearance in Star Wars: A New Hope.
After ambushing Luke Skywalker and attempting to rob him, they were frightened away by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s imitation of a Krayt dragon call – something that comes full circle in The Mandalorian season 2.
Hett had at first believed that his mother was a Tusken, but later found out that Tuskens and humans are not genetically compatible, which indicates that Tuskens are indeed a specific race.
