In Memoriam: Honoring the Legacy of U.S. District Judge Edward G. Smith of Easton

Easton mourns the passing of an esteemed figure, the Honorable Edward Smith, United States District Judge, who departed on November 27, 2023. In commemorating Judge Smith’s life, we bid farewell to a man whose wit, warm greetings, and enthusiastic handshake were as familiar as his dedication to justice, honor, and service. Beyond the courtroom, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and genuine connections.

Judge Smith’s genuine curiosity about people, coupled with impeccable politeness, endeared him not only as a respected judge but also as a cherished friend. Colleagues and friends fondly recall his quick wit, thoughtful remarks, and a generosity that lightened the mood in any situation.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer L. Ireland, his three sons, Michael P. Smith, Benjamin H. Smith, and David M. Smith, along with other family members. His legacy is one of exemplary service and unwavering commitment to justice, evident in both the courtroom and his military service, as well as in community endeavors.

Since 2014, Judge Smith served as a Federal District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, presiding over numerous cases with impartiality and integrity. His broad appeal was reflected in his nomination by President Barack Obama and confirmation by a Republican majority Senate, showcasing rare bipartisan support for his legal expertise. Before federal service, he served for twelve years as a Pennsylvania state trial judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Northampton County.

Judge Smith’s military career spanned 30 years, combining military service and judicial responsibilities. He achieved the rank of Navy Captain and served as a military judge, taking command of two separate reserve units and contributing to the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals. Notably, he took a temporary leave of absence in 2007 to forward-deploy to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal, reflect his dedicated service. A graduate of Easton Area High School and Dickinson School of Law, Judge Smith spent most of his life and career in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he raised his family, served his community and country, and ultimately passed away.

A Memorial Celebration of Life is scheduled for December 1, 2023, at 5:00pm in Courtroom Number 1 at the Northampton County Courthouse. A Catholic Burial Mass will follow on December 2, 2023, at 10:00am at St. Jane Frances Church. Funeral services are entrusted to Finegan Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Easton or the Kiwanis Club of Palmer. Easton pays its respects to Judge Edward G. Smith, honoring a legacy of service, integrity, and genuine connection.
